Report Says How Weapons Are Smuggled Into The United Kingdom
According to the NCA’s new report, dark web based criminals are smuggling weapons illegally to the United Kingdom by splitting them into component parts and shipping them via courier services. The report says that firearm sellers are taking advantage of the huge expansion of courier firms, so they can ship the products from overseas to their customers in the UK.
The NCA is currently working with courier firms in order to stop the shipping of weapons via mail, however, they admit that due to the low volume of these shipments, it will be almost impossible to effectively screen firearm packages. David Armond, Deputy Director General at NCA said:
“It would be like holding back the sea to try to expect every parcel to be searched, but we are working with industry to plug vulnerabilities.”
Lynne Owens, Director General at NCA, warned the people that a Brexit vote could jeopardize the agency’s intelligence-sharing and cooperation with other countries:
“At the NCA, one of the things we do that is different to other law enforcement agencies is to have a significant overseas network. We work with 150 partners globally, and to tackle crime effectively we have to able to cooperate closely with others. It would be more difficult if we could not share information in an agile way, and at the moment that happens within the European Union mechanism.”
